This is another way to go. Put out ads in the local newspaper, put out flyers or work on word-my-mouth recommendations.

If you have the skill & the tools to perform a set of woodworking jobs, you can. You should be ready to work with your customers, be ready to handle custom orders & take on orders that take a longer duration to finish.

You can start on a low-key with custom woodworking jobs as well. For example, I read about someone who started out a woodworking business installing door & window frames because that’s what he had a lot of experience with. And he did get a lot of business as well, made a good income because they were all quick & fixed rate jobs.

Tools & Space

Let’s get to the next important point & which is tools & space for a woodshop. Contrary to normal belief, a huge space is not required. A 12X24 is adequate & a 20X24 is ideal for more kinds of woodworking projects. We need to remember that we are setting up the woodworking business from home, and space will often be a constraint.

The same goes for the tools. You do not need a dazzling array of commercial-grade power tools. But you do need the basic ones.

The thing with both woodworking tools & space for a wood shop is that it all depends on where you are starting from. You can even start with just a few hand tools if you want. You get the picture.

Even if you are making your own high-profit woodcraft & selling online, branding will make you more money. People will see your logo, and your profile write up & they will see a business that is reliable & professional. Reliable & professional goods always get a better price.

Packaging is an equally important part of branding. Your packaging can be as simple as a brown cardboard box. The design process begins with an idea, a pencil, paper, and a few rough sketches of your concepts; this allows you to try various layout variations quickly and easily.

 

Dozens of ideas will come and go as the most viable design eventually begins to emerge. This sandbox phase is where new and different approaches can easily and quickly be tried & analyzed, validated, or rejected.

Is an Architect Needed When Building a Container Home?

 

It wasn’t until the early1930s that it became common to use building plans when constructing a residential home. In the “old days,” builders rarely drew detailed specifications as we find in modern house blueprints.

 

Design and construction back then were mostly a matter of proven methods passed down from father to son or by word of mouth. Most of the builders and crews didn’t use plans as we know them today at all. The plans were in their heads. But, as construction materials and methods grew more complex fewer and fewer people were willing to tackle home building on their own, and the architect’s role soon became to be perceived as indispensable.

 

Interestingly, this traditional dual-role designer-builder approach was considered unethical and banned by the AIA until 1979. In the AIA’s view, architecture was different from building, and the standardized AIA contracts developed at that time put the architect in overall charge of the building process, making him a sort of “Grand Master of the Building Trades.”

 

The architect’s forte is the ideal design, generally understood to be a space tailored and ideally suited to an individual or family and their lifestyle. His training allows him to verify his designs to a large extent, be he will still rely on an engineer for more complex structural issues. An architect has a good working knowledge of the local building codes and can produce drawings of his designs, which he uses to sell his client on the project.

 

I’m often asked if an architect is necessary or helpful when designing a shipping container home. Some people assume they can eliminate the additional cost of an architect since the modular approach, on the surface, appears to be much simpler than the complex wood framing of traditional construction.  Since a professional architect charges from 5% to 25% of the total construction costs as a fee for his work, it’s certainly a legitimate question. 

 

An architect can be a great asset when designing any structure; the type of work an architect does is detailed and can be extremely labor-intensive. The level of precision necessary is beyond many people’s ability. Besides an architect’s ability to draw or create models, his knowledge of local codes as well as knowledge of the ins and outs of the local building department can be invaluable.

 

Keep in mind that architects are professional experts, and asking an expert to take on something he’s not an expert at (container homes) may not be very enticing to him. The safe way out could be for him to merely say, “In my professional opinion, the container home concept isn’t (insert any reason here)!”  This way, he can avoid the learning curve, still maintain his professional stature and not take on any unnecessary risks or a potentially troublesome client who may want to pay a reduced fee. On the other hand, he may be happy to take the job (with or without an additional charge) since it’s such an unusual job.

 

A possible alternative may be to locate an architect, drafting, or design student willing to work on your project as a school or side project.

 

Try looking under professional services in your local Craig’s List. You could even place your ad looking for help. With the construction and building markets being what they are today, don’t be surprised if you find an army of people willing and able to assist you in various aspects of your design work. Don’t discount the talent; available and eager to work on anything different and exciting. Finding an architect, design, or home planning student to work with you to develop your full-size working drawings will probably save you weeks if not months of work.

 

By doing much of the preliminary design work, which will include acquiring the correct container measurements and providing a plan with preliminary dimensioned drawings and shipping container blueprints, along with detailed drawings, you will save money by giving your team what they need before they need it.

 

When it comes to the actual design drawings and plans, the most crucial question is what ate your abilities? Your talent, patience, and budget will play a large part in determining if an architect should play a role in your project.

What is an Emergency Shelter and Why to Have One

Any temporary shelter set up to protect people from hazardous elements can be called an emergency shelter. Emergency shelters are provided to people who have lost their homes or places where they lived due to a natural calamity, war, or disease. In some cities and towns, there are permanent emergency shelters. These are managed by private organizations and are used by people who may have lost their homes in a fire or any other disaster.

 

Any construction erected to provide people with temporary shelter can be termed an emergency shelter. The most common type of emergency shelter used is tents. International organizations keep stock of tents and send them wherever emergency shelters are required. Schools, churches, and halls have also been used as emergency shelters. During the Second World War, tube train stations were used as emergency shelters.

 

An emergency shelter can be made from a variety of materials. In a jungle or wooded area, branches are cut and placed in the ground, and leaves are spread over the top as a roof. This may be one of the crudest forms of an emergency shelter that can be constructed.

A prefabricated home can be assembled fast and provides better relief against the elements than a tent. Earth is mixed with straw, and water is plastered onto the tarp. The door and windows may be made by using salvaged doors and windows or placing a scrap wooden beam across the opening and hanging a scrap sheet of cloth, tarp, or any other material. Women and children suffer the most in an emergency and require immediate shelter. In this episode, I will show you how to: identify, harvest, and prepare White Pine Needle Tea.

 

To make pine needle tea, follow these steps:

 

  • Choose young, tender pine needles (preferably from the Eastern White Pine, as they have a milder taste). Avoid needles from pine trees labeled as toxic or unsafe for consumption.

 

  • Rinse the needles thoroughly under cold water to remove any dirt or debris.

 

  • Bring fresh, cold water to a boil.

 

  • Add 1-2 loosely packed cups of pine needles to the boiling water. For a stronger flavor, use more needles; for a milder taste, use fewer.

 

  • Reduce heat and let the tea steep for 5-10 minutes. Strain the needles out using a fine mesh strainer or cheesecloth.

 

  • Add sweeteners or other desired ingredients, such as honey, lemon, or mint, to taste.

It is also used to manufacture synthetic fibers, plastics, and explosives, and it is added to many cleaning products, detergents, window cleaners, stain removers, bleaches, dyes, and floor waxes. Swallowing even small amounts of liquid ammonia in your household cleaner might cause severe burns in your mouth and throat. If you get it in your eyes, it can lead to blindness. Ammonia is a corrosive substance that can burn the skin, eyes, respiratory tract, mouth, and your digestive tract.

 

AMMONIUM HYDROXIDE

Ammonium hydroxide is a colorless liquid chemical solution that forms when ammonia dissolves in water. It can also release ammonia gas into the air.

 

It can be found in many industrial products and cleaners, such as flooring strippers, brick cleaners, and cement. This chemical can cause breathing difficulty, coughing, severe pain or burning in the nose, eyes, ears, lips, tongue, esophagus, stomach, or throat, vision loss, severe abdominal pain, vomiting, severe change in pH (too much or too little acid in the blood, which leads to damage in all of the body organs), holes in skin tissue, and other symptoms.

 

BENZENE

This carcinogenic chemical can be absorbed through the skin and irritates mucous membranes. It is poisonous when ingested, and inhalation of the fumes may be toxic. It is cited by the EPA and OSHA as a threat to public health. This chemical is found in oven cleaners, detergents, furniture polishes, spot removers, and nail-polish removers.

 

Diseases associated with benzene include Acute Myelogenous Leukemia (AML), Non-Hodgkin’s Lymphoma, Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia, Myelodysplastic Syndrome (MDS), Myelofibrosis and Myeloid Metaplasia, Aplastic Anemia, Acute Lymphocytic Leukemia (ALL), Hairy Cell Leukemia, Multiple Myeloma, Thrombocytopenic Purpura, Chronic Myelogenous Leukemia (CML), Hematologic Cancers.

 

CHLORINE

This widely used chemical is a suspected carcinogen and a strong irritant, responsible for many poisonings every year. The 1990 Clean Air Act lists it as a hazardous air pollutant… yet you breathe it in every time you use it in your laundry products or tub and tile cleaners. And airborne residues remain in your toilet paper, napkins, and paper towels.

Household bleach, used to whiten fabrics or remove mold from surfaces, is a 5% solution of a stabilized form of chlorine. It is a strong corrosive that irritates or burns the skin, eyes, and respiratory tract. It may cause pulmonary edema or vomiting and coma if ingested. Never mix bleach with toilet bowl cleaners or ammonia. The fumes could be dead!

 

FORMALDEHYDE

Formaldehyde is highly toxic and a known carcinogen. It is used to manufacture glues, is also a preservative in deodorizers, disinfectants, cosmetics, and vaccines, and is used for embalming bodies. Formaldehyde is used in shampoo, conditioner, shower gel, liquid hand soap, and bubble baths. Products for children, such as bubble baths and baby shampoo, even have formaldehyde in them! Some health effects from exposure to formaldehyde include eye, nose, and throat irritation… wheezing and coughing… fatigue, skin rash, and severe allergic reactions. Formaldehyde is also used in permanent-press sheets, mattresses, foams, plastics, and building materials.

 

GLYCOL ETHER

Glycol ether can irritate the skin, eyes, nose, and throat. It can also be hazardous to the reproductive system. This chemical can damage the kidneys, liver, and central nervous system. It is quickly absorbed through the skin and is found in household cleaning products, paints, cosmetics, and perfumes.

 

Also known as butyl cellosolve (2-butoxy-1-ethanol, ethylene glycol monobutyl ether, butoxyethanol, and butyl oxitol).

 

HYDROCHLORIC ACID

Hydrochloric acid is a corrosive and eye and skin irritant. It can dissolve and destroy tender tissues upon direct contact. Eyes, nose, and throat are easily irritated by vapors. Contact can cause burning, permanent scarring, and even blindness. This chemical is found in aluminum cleaners and rust removers.

 

KEROSENE

Kerosene (mineral spirits) is an eye and skin irritant and can damage lung tissues. It is neurotoxic. Kerosene may contain the carcinogen benzene. It is found in all-purpose cleaners, furniture polishes, and waxes.

 

LYE

Sodium hydroxide (also known as lye, caustic soda, and soda lye) is an eye, skin, and respiratory irritant. It can burn eyes, skin, and internal organs. Lye can cause lung damage and blindness and be fatal if swallowed. It is found in household cleaners, oven cleaners, tub and tile cleaners, toilet bowl cleaners, and drain openers.

 

MORPHOLINE

Morpholine is extremely toxic. It is irritating to the skin, eyes, and mucous membranes, and may cause liver and kidney damage. It reacts with nitrites to form carcinogenic nitrosamines. It can also aggravate pulmonary/bronchial disease or cause breathing difficulty, burn the skin, cause blindness, cause abdominal pain, diarrhea, nausea, and vomiting. This chemical is found in all-purpose cleaners, furniture polishes, and car waxes.

 

NAPHTHALENE

Naphthalene irritates the eyes and skin and can cause cataracts, corneal damage, and kidney damage. It is a suspected carcinogen. This chemical is extremely toxic to small children and infants and can cause blood damage to fetuses. This chemical is found in mothballs, air fresheners, deodorizers, carpet cleaners, and toilet bowl cleaners.

 

ORGANIC SOLVENTS

Organic solvents (carbon disulfide, n-hexane, methyl n-butyl ketone, toluene trichloroethylene, perchloroethylene) are neurotoxins and central-nervous-system depressants. They are recognized as carcinogens. These chemicals are found in all-purpose cleaners, degreasers, metal polishes, varnish and lacquer removers, dry-cleaning solutions, paints and coatings, and adhesives.

 

Drinking water contaminated with perchloroethylene has leukemia and birth-defect implications. Long-term overexposure may affect the nervous system. This chemical is found in spot removers, degreasers, and dry-cleaning fluids.

 

PETROLEUM PRODUCTS

Petroleum products (benzene, toluene xylene, benzene, naphthalene, and Stoddard solvent) are powerful eye, skin, and respiratory irritants and are either known or suspected carcinogens. Neurotoxic effects can lead to organic brain damage.

You are exposed to them in many common products, including heavy-duty cleaners, stain removers, furniture polish, car wax, lice shampoo, home and garden pesticides, flea-control products, furniture polish, and laundry products. Don’t assume these products are safe just because they are not banned (yet).

 

PHENOL

Phenol (alkyl phenoxy polyethoxy ethanol and nonyl phenoxy ethoxylate) is very toxic and is a suspected carcinogen. It can cause swelling, pimples, and hives. It can cause circulatory collapse, convulsions, cold sweats, coma, and death if swallowed. This chemical is found in all-purpose cleaners, air fresheners, disinfectants, furniture polish, and laundry detergents.

 

SODIUM BISULFATE

This corrosive chemical damages the eyes, skin, and internal tissues if swallowed. It can cause asthma attacks. Found in toilet-bowl cleaners and deodorizers

 

EDTA

Also known as ethylene-diamine-tetra-acetic or diammonium, this chemical is found in laundry detergent and is a skin irritant. It also irritates mucous membranes, leading to allergies, asthma, and skin rashes. This chemical does not biodegrade. It binds with heavy metals in our lakes and streams, affecting our water supply.

 

Now that you are armed with some information read the labels before you buy! Look for labels that say the product is phosphate-free (phosphates cause excessive growth in aquatic plants, leading to the suffocation of fish and other aquatic life). Phosphates are found in laundry detergents, dishwasher detergents, and all-purpose cleaners. Look for products that specifically state “no phosphates”, “no solvents”, “petroleum-free”, etc. Better yet, look for products that contain only plant-based ingredients.
